The trek is soft and suitable for most fitness levels, and you're back in Catania before dark.

5h

Step-by-step itinerary

  • Visit extinct craters at 2000 meters
  • Walk on edges with scenic views
  • Explore lava flow cave with gear

The Experience

You're standing at 2,000 meters on Mount Etna, the largest active volcano in Europe, and the ground beneath your feet is still telling the story of eruptions that happened centuries ago. The drive up from Catania winds through villages built on lava flows, past vineyards and orchards that somehow thrive in this dark soil, and your guide points out how the people here live with the mountain — not despite it, but because of it. The landscape shifts as you climb: birch and oak give way to pine, and the air gets thinner and cooler.

The trek itself is soft, meaning you're not scrambling or climbing hard — you're walking the edges of extinct craters, looking down into the shapes the volcano left behind. What gets you is the scale. The lava flows are right there, dark and twisted, next to the green of the forest, and it's strange to see them side by side. Then comes the part that stays with you: you put on a helmet and take a torch and walk into a lava cave, one that was carved out by flowing magma during an eruption. The cave still has its own temperature, its own air, and walking through it — ducking under the stone ceiling, seeing the marks where the lava ran — makes the whole mountain feel less like a tourist attraction and more like something alive that you're standing inside.

The sunset trek timing means you're heading down as the light goes orange and then red, and the shadows in the craters deepen. Private transport picks you up from Catania and brings you back, so you're not managing a rental car or a bus schedule — you're just there, walking, looking, listening to someone who knows the mountain explain what you're seeing. Bring hiking shoes and a jacket; in winter the route might drop to lower altitudes if snow or ice closes the higher roads, but the cave and the craters are still there.
