The experience

I’ll admit, I didn’t expect Mount Etna to smell so… earthy? Not smoky, just this mix of pine needles and old stone after rain. We met our guide, Salvo, near the lower slopes. He waved us over like we were old friends. The van ride up was bumpy, windows fogged from everyone’s breath (it was early), but you could already see black patches of old lava cutting through the green. Salvo kept pointing out houses half-swallowed by flows: some people just rebuild right there. That kind of stubbornness is something else.

The trek itself wasn’t too hard, though my boots definitely earned their keep. There’s this moment when you step onto a patch of crunchy black rock and everything goes quiet except for wind and your own steps: felt sort of lunar, honestly. We ducked into a lava cave with helmets and torches (I bonked my head once, Salvo pretended not to notice). He told stories about Etna’s moods and local myths: apparently the volcano has its own personality here. Lunch at the rifugio was simple but perfect: bread still warm, salty cheese, olives that tasted like sunshine. I probably ate too much.

After lunch we drove out to the Alcantara Gorges. The river water is freezing even in summer: one kid dared me to dip my hand in and I yelped loud enough for everyone to stare (worth it). The gorge walls are these wild geometric shapes from where hot lava met cold river ages ago. It’s hard not to imagine what that must’ve sounded like: the crash of fire and water making something new. I still think about that view down into the blue-green water between those dark rocks.
