The experience

"You stand on the volcano, not just look at it," our guide said as we pulled away from Taormina toward the southern slopes of Mount Etna. That distinction matters. The private Mount Etna tour takes you to the extinct craters and lava flows on the volcano's quieter side. The chestnut forests up there are dense and still, nothing like the tourist crowds at the summit. We started at Monte Vetore, one of Etna's largest craters, where a bronze statue of Tifeo marks the spot. The day ends at Gambino Winery, where the real experience happens. You taste a series of Etna DOC wines (reds and whites, all grown on the volcanic soil), and eat lunch with local products.
