The Experience

"You stand on the volcano, not just look at it," our guide said as we pulled away from Taormina toward the southern slopes of Mount Etna. That distinction matters. The private Mount Etna tour takes you to the extinct craters and lava flows on the volcano's quieter side — the chestnut forests up there are dense and still, nothing like the tourist crowds at the summit. We started at Monte Vetore, one of Etna's largest craters, where a bronze statue of Tifeo marks the spot. The walk itself isn't long or steep, but standing inside that crater, looking at the layered walls of cooled lava, you feel the weight of what happened here over centuries.

After the crater, we dropped into a typical village built entirely of lava stone — the kind of place where the 1669 eruption buried everything, and people rebuilt on top of the ash. The square is small and quiet, and the houses have this dark, almost black tone from the stone. We stopped to see the underground church, still buried under the lava casting from that same eruption. It's strange to stand above a church you can't enter, to know it's down there preserved in stone. Then came the liqueur tasting — small glasses of something made right there on the slopes, sharp and warming at once.

The day ends at Gambino Winery, where the real experience happens. You taste a series of Etna DOC wines — reds and whites, all grown on the volcanic soil — and eat lunch with local products. The wines taste different when you've just walked the volcano that made them. The tasting room is below ground, cool and quiet, and the guide walks you through what the volcanic soil does to the grapes, why Etna wines taste the way they do. Lunch is simple: cheese, cured meat, bread, the wines. It takes time, and that's the point. Private transportation means you don't rush between stops, and bottled water is in the car the whole day.
