Standing at the Edge of Bocca Nuova, 3,250 Meters Up

You ride a cable car and minibus to 2,900 meters, then trek for ninety minutes to the central crater and the Northeast summit at 3,329 meters. The route includes views of Bocca Nuova (the most impressive crater, opened in 1968), a full circle around the Voragine, and a long descent through the Valle del Bove caldera. Your guide provides boots, jacket, helmet and expertise; you pay separately for the cable car and minibus transport.

5h

Step-by-step itinerary

  • Take cable car and 4x4 minibus to 2900m
  • Hike 1.5 hours uphill to central crater edge
  • Observe Bocca Nuova crater
  • Walk around Bocca Nuova to Voragine crater
  • Climb steeply to North East Crater summit
  • Enjoy 360° views including Aeolian Islands
  • Descend through Valle del Bove volcanic amphitheater
  • Return to cable car station at 2500m

The Experience

The cable car swings you up through the volcanic landscape to 2,900 meters, and then a 4×4 minibus takes over on the rough track toward Torre del Filosofo. After about ninety minutes of uphill walking on loose scoria and ash, the ground opens up in front of you — the central crater of Mount Etna, and inside it, the Bocca Nuova, a mouth that opened in 1968 and still breathes. You're standing at the edge of Europe's highest active volcano, and the thing that gets you is not the view (though the Aeolian Islands float on the horizon if the day is clear) but the sound. A living mountain does not stay quiet.

From the Bocca Nuova you circle around to the Voragine, the actual heart of the central crater, and then make a steep but short scramble up to the Northeast Crater, formed in 1911. That's the true summit at 3,329 meters. The descent is long — you drop back down through the volcanic amphitheater of Valle del Bove, an eight-kilometer caldera that opens below you like a scar — but the slope is gentle enough, just ash and scoria under your feet all the way back to the cable car station at 2,500 meters. Your guide carries a helmet, jacket, and trekking boots if you need them; the cable car and minibus ride up are not included in the price, so factor that in when you book.

The route can shift depending on what Etna is doing that day or what the weather decides. You need moderate fitness — the altitude and the loose ground demand it — and the trek is not suitable if you have spinal issues, are pregnant, or have cardiovascular or asthma concerns. Public transport gets you to the base, but once you're on the mountain, you're committed to the pace and the path.

What’s included

  • Your day includes a professional guide, trekking boots, a jacket, helmet and other safety equipment.
  • The cable car and 4×4 minibus transport up to 2,900 meters are not included and must be paid separately.
  • Public transport options are available to reach the base of the mountain.

Operated by AITNE

Is this one for you?Book this if you're fit enough for steep terrain and want to stand on the rim of an active volcano without arranging your own transport or safety gear — the guide and equipment take that off your hands, and the cable car plus minibus handle the altitude so you can focus on the walk itself.
