The experience
Neapolis Archaeological Park anchors the morning. The Greek Theatre, the largest in Sicily, sits on a hillside overlooking the coast. You walk through it and climb to the top for views across the region. The Ear of Dionysius (a legendary cave carved into the rock) is famous for its acoustics. Sound bounces off the walls in ways that made it a prison in ancient times. The Roman amphitheater and the ancient quarries called Latomie fill out the park, and you move through them at your own pace with your guide.
Ortigia, the island where Greeks founded Syracuse over two thousand years ago, comes next. You walk the narrow streets past the Temple of Apollo and into the cathedral square, ringed by bright limestone buildings: the cathedral itself, Palazzo Beneventano, the church of Santa Lucia. The Arethusa fountain sits at the water's edge. You pass through the Jewish Quarter, see the Jewish bath, and end at the Fish Point of Sale, the working market where the day's catch lands and the rhythm of the city shows itself.
Noto closes the afternoon. The town is a baroque UNESCO site rebuilt in the late 1700s after an earthquake, its palaces and churches faced in pale stone. You walk the center, visiting the major monuments and the plazas that connect them. The whole day runs 8 to 9 hours with your private driver and guide. Bottled water and an air-conditioned vehicle are included.
