Syracuse Shore Excursion: Archaeological Park & Ortigia
See five centuries of Greek and Roman ruins without leaving the port schedule behind
A 4-hour private shore excursion from Syracuse cruise dock combines the Neapolis Archaeological Park (where you walk past the Greek theater, the Ear of Dionysius and Roman amphitheater) with a guided walking tour of Ortigia's old town, cathedral and Aretusa spring. A professional guide in English, Italian or German leads the route. Round-trip transport by private car or minivan and all monument entry fees are included, so you step off the ship and go straight to the sites.

The experience
The tour starts the moment you clear the dock. A guide meets you at the ship and drives you to Neapolis Archaeological Park, where you spend the first part of the morning walking among the Greek theater, the latomie stone quarries (ancient quarries where prisoners once worked), the Ear of Dionysius, the altar of Hieron and the Roman amphitheater. Each monument sits within the same park, so you move between them on foot without backtracking to the car.
From Neapolis, your guide drives you across to Ortigia, the island that was ancient Syracuse's original settlement. You walk the narrow streets of the old town, visit the cathedral (a former Greek temple repurposed in the medieval period), see the Apollo temple and stop at the Aretusa spring, a freshwater fountain that rises from the sea. The walking tour moves at a pace that lets you absorb the layering of Greek, Roman and medieval architecture without rushing. If you want to step inside the cathedral, your guide can arrange that.
Transport is by air-conditioned car or minivan, so you're not walking the full distance between sites or waiting for public buses. All entrance fees to the monuments are paid upfront, meaning no ticket lines or separate transactions once you're there. The tour wraps in time for you to return to the ship before re-boarding, with a small buffer built in.

Is this one for you?Four hours is tight enough that you can't linger at any single site, but long enough to see the major Greek and Roman monuments and walk Ortigia's old town without sprinting. If your ship's schedule gives you more time in port, you'll have an hour or two left for a meal or a second look at a favorite spot. If the window is shorter, the tour is built to fit it.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English, German and Italian.
What's inside the Neapolis Archaeological Park that I'll actually see?
Neapolis holds five major monuments: the Greek theater, carved into the hillside and still used for performances; the latomie, enormous stone quarries where the rock was extracted for building; the Ear of Dionysius, a cave shaped like an ear with unusual acoustics; the altar of Hieron, a massive stone platform; and the Roman amphitheater. Your guide walks you to each one and explains what you're looking at.
Is there time to go inside the cathedral in Ortigia, or just look at the outside?
The cathedral visit is optional. Your guide can arrange entry if you want to see the interior, but you're not required to: some travelers prefer to photograph the exterior and move through the old town streets instead. Either way, you'll see the Apollo temple and the Aretusa spring.
How much walking is involved over the 4 hours?
You walk through both sites, but the distances are manageable. Transport by private car or minivan covers the journey between Neapolis and Ortigia and gets you from the dock to the park, so most of your time on foot is spent at the monuments themselves, not traveling between them.
Do I need to dress a certain way to enter the monuments?
Yes. A dress code applies to places of worship, including the cathedral. Sleeveless tops are not allowed. Shoulders must be covered for both men and women. Wear a shirt with sleeves to avoid being turned away at the entrance.
