The experience
Mount Etna dominates the day. The drive takes you up through shifting landscapes to Rifugio Sapienza, a mountain refuge at 1,923 meters with a bar, shop and panoramic terrace overlooking much of eastern Sicily. From there, you can ride the cable car to 2,500 meters, then walk or continue by off-road vehicle to reach the crater area at 2,920 meters: the highest point on Europe's largest active volcano. The UNESCO-designated mountain's views stretch to Malta on clear days. Cable car and vehicle rides up the crater carry an extra fee, so you decide how high to go.
Taormina fills the afternoon. Your driver drops you at Porta Messina, the entry to the pedestrian zone, and you're free to move through the medieval streets at your own pace. Piazza IX Aprile, the town's social heart, opens onto Corso Umberto with its cafes, shops and historic buildings. The Greek-Roman Theater stands nearby if you want to pay for entry. The square's terrace overlooks the sea and the coast below.
Isola Bella sits at the foot of Taormina, a small island connected to shore by a sand bar with clear water and wild vegetation. The tour stops here for photos before the drive back to Palermo, completing the 11 to 12 hour loop.

Is this one for you? This is a private tour, so you travel with your own group and driver rather than joining strangers, and you set the pace at each stop, especially on Etna, where cable car and crater rides are optional extras you choose. Book this if you want the flexibility to spend more time at one site or skip the higher elevations on the volcano, and the convenience of not arranging your own transport between Palermo, the mountain and the coast.
