The Experience

“You know, the bakery still smells like burnt bread sometimes,” our guide Marco grinned as we ducked under a low arch in Pompeii. He’d been showing us the grooves left by ancient carts in the stone streets, but I was still thinking about that first moment inside the forum—sun beating down, dust in the air, voices bouncing off marble. It’s weird how you can almost hear the old city if you stop talking for a second. Marco pointed out a faded fresco on a wall and told us how people would gossip here after their baths. I tried to imagine it but mostly just felt small—like time was pressing in from all sides.

The drive up to Mt. Vesuvius was quieter than I expected. Our little group got sleepy in the van, maybe from the heat or maybe just from trying to process everything we’d seen in Pompeii. When we stepped out at 1000 meters above sea level, the air changed—cooler, sharper, and carrying this faint mineral smell that clung to my nose. The path called “Gran Cono” looked steeper than photos had made it seem. My legs complained halfway up but there was this stubborn part of me that wanted to see inside the crater. At one point I stopped to catch my breath and realized how blue the Gulf of Naples looked below—almost fake.

I think what surprised me most wasn’t the view (though it’s wild up there), but how quiet it felt near the rim. You could hear gravel crunching under boots and little else. Someone asked Marco if he ever worried about another eruption; he just shrugged and said, “Vesuvius is family here—we respect her moods.” That stuck with me more than any fact about Roman ruins or volcanoes.
