The experience

The boat leaves Sorrento port in the morning, and the 30-minute crossing gives you a view of the Sorrento peninsula before you reach Marina Grande, Capri's main port. From there, your guide takes you by semi-private vehicle to the Blue Grotto, the island's signature attraction, where you board a small rowing boat with a sailor to enter the cave. The grotto's famous blue light comes from sunlight filtering through an underwater opening, and the boatman rows you inside to see it. If the grotto closes due to sea conditions, the tour includes a one-hour boat circuit of the island instead.

After the grotto, the guide leads you through Capri's center, starting at Piazzetta di Capri, the social heart of the town. You walk Via Camerelle, the main shopping street lined with high-end boutiques, then reach the Gardens of Augustus: your second included admission. The gardens hold 850 varieties of plants and flowers and open onto views of the Faraglioni rock formations and the steep Via Krupp staircase carved into the cliff. In the afternoon, you move to Anacapri, the island's more authentic town, where you have free time to explore the historic center on foot. During this window, you can optionally add the Monte Solaro chairlift to reach the island's highest point, or visit Villa San Michele, the clifftop house of Swedish author Axel Munthe: both available at extra cost. The return boat to Sorrento departs in late afternoon.
