The experience

Eight to nine hours means you move at your own pace. The driver picks you up at your Sorrento hotel, the port in Salerno, or Naples airport, then heads to Pompeii first. You walk the ancient streets yourself: past the remains of shops, temples and houses buried by Vesuvius in 79 A.D., and spend as long there as you want before the driver takes you south toward the coast. The route itself becomes part of the day: the van stops for photos along the cliffs and curves of the Amalfi Drive.

Positano comes next, a town built into the rock face with narrow alleys, boutiques and views down to the water. You have free time to walk, shop or sit by the sea. Then Amalfi, the former maritime republic, where the Cathedral of Saint Andrew sits on the main piazza and the streets open onto small squares and the harbor. Again, the time is yours: wander, eat, browse the shops. The driver waits and takes you back to your starting point when you're ready.

The vehicle is air-conditioned and carries WiFi. Infant car seats are available free if you request one when you book. You'll need a moderate level of fitness for walking Pompeii's uneven ground and the steep alleys of both coastal towns.
