The experience

The tour starts with pickup from your Sorrento hotel and a drive along the SS 145 Sorrentina, the winding coastal road that climbs above the Bay of Naples with Mount Vesuvius visible across the water. You arrive at Pompeii in either the morning or afternoon, your choice, to time the ruins visit around your preference for fewer crowds and cooler temperatures. Your archaeologist guide leads you through the site on foot, starting at Porta Marina, the grand dual-arched gateway that opens onto the Forum and the Temple of Apollo. The tour covers the Basilica Pompeiana, the Forum itself with its travertine paving stones, the Macellum food market, and the Forum Baths with their intact hypocaust heating system. You'll also visit the House of the Vettii, famous for its vivid frescoes and peristyle garden, and stops like the Thermopolium of Regio V, Pompeii's ancient fast-food counter, where archaeologists found 2,000-year-old remains of duck, pork, fish and snails still in the terracotta storage jars.

After Pompeii, the driver takes you along the Amalfi Drive (SS163), the legendary cliff-hugging road carved into the rock face. You choose which two towns to visit: Positano with its pastel houses tumbling down to the sea; Ravello perched high above with Villa Cimbrone's Terrace of Infinity; Amalfi with its striped Duomo and narrow alleys; Maiori with the Amalfi Coast's longest sandy beach; or less-known options like Minori, Erchie or Cetara. The guide tailors the stops and pacing to what matters to you, and you can request a coastal lunch or wine tasting on Mount Vesuvius as an add-on. WiFi and bottled water are on board throughout the day.

Two booking options exist: one includes skip-the-line entry to Pompeii (€19 per adult, children free), and one does not. You'll buy tickets at the gate if you choose that route. The tour accommodates children from age 1, with specialized infant seats available. A family-friendly Pompeii version is offered for children ages 6 to 11. Your guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian or French depending on your preference.

Is this one for you?Choose the morning Pompeii slot if you want to explore the ruins before the crowds arrive and the heat peaks. The afternoon option works better if you prefer a later start or want to spend more time on the Amalfi Coast. The flexibility to pick your two coastal towns as the day unfolds suits travelers who want to follow their interests rather than stick to a fixed itinerary.

Yes. You can book a morning slot to see the ruins early, or an afternoon departure to avoid the midday crowds and heat. The guide will confirm your preferred timing when you book.

What exactly is the Thermopolium of Regio V that gets mentioned?

The Thermopolium of Regio V is Pompeii's ancient snack bar, fully excavated in 2020. It has an L-shaped counter with bright frescoes of ducks and a rooster, and deep terracotta jars where archaeologists found 2,000-year-old food remains (duck, pork, fish, snails) all mixed together like an ancient Roman meal. It's one of the most vivid, high-impact stops on the tour.

Do I have to decide which Amalfi Coast towns to visit before I book?

No. The tour is built around your requests. You can decide as the day goes by which two towns you want to see (Positano, Ravello, Amalfi, Maiori, Minori, Cetara or others), so you make the best of your time based on what appeals to you in the moment.

What's the drive like from Sorrento to Pompeii?

The SS 145 Sorrentina is one of Italy's most scenic coastal drives, winding along limestone cliffs with views of Mount Vesuvius across the Bay of Naples. The road passes through tunnels and over bridges lined with lemon groves and historic watchtowers. It's a sensory journey that builds the anticipation as you approach the ruins.
