The Experience

Ever wondered if those pastel houses in Positano really look like that? I did. Turns out, they do—maybe even brighter when you’re actually there, squinting in the morning sun. Our driver, Antonio (who somehow knew every shortcut), picked us up right at our hotel and within half an hour we were winding along those cliff roads everyone talks about. The windows were down and I caught this salty breeze mixed with lemon—honestly, I didn’t expect to notice that. We stopped for a quick photo where the sea just drops away below you. I still think about that view sometimes.

Walking down through Positano’s narrow lanes felt almost like being backstage somewhere—shopkeepers chatting in Italian, sandals hanging from doorways, a little dog sleeping on a step. Antonio told us to try the granita at a tiny stand near Spiaggia Grande; it was sharp and sweet and melted fast in my hand. People kept smiling at us—maybe because we looked lost or maybe just because it was Tuesday, who knows? After that, Amalfi itself was louder, more alive somehow. The cathedral steps were crowded but nobody seemed to mind. We grabbed coffee at a café where the waiter taught me how to say “sfogliatella” (I definitely messed it up).

The drive up to Ravello got quieter—less traffic, more green hills rolling past. It felt cooler too, almost like the air changed as we climbed. In Ravello’s gardens (we picked Villa Rufolo), flowers spilled over old stone walls and there was this hush except for birds. I sat on a bench overlooking everything—the sea way below, Minori tucked into the cliffs—and tried not to think about leaving yet. There’s something about seeing all those places in one day that makes your head spin a bit—in a good way.
