The experience

The Mercedes picks you up from your hotel and heads into the Amalfi Coast's most visited towns, but the route bends around your interests. Positano comes first: a vertical town of pastel buildings stacked down to a pebble beach, where you get free time to walk the romantic center and reach the waterfront. The driver-guide explains the mythology (Poseidon founded it for a sea nymph, legend says) and the practical history as you move through the narrow streets.

The second stop is Conca dei Marini and the Emerald Grotto, where seawater filters through limestone and turns an intense green. You can take a raft into the cavern for a small fee, or stay on the road and move on. Then Amalfi itself: the first Italian maritime republic, now a town built around its cathedral and the main square dedicated to Flavio Gioia, who invented the sea compass. You have time to explore the Duomo and its cloister or simply sit by the water. The final stop is Ravello, perched 300 meters above the sea, where the Cathedral of St. Pantaleone and the medieval Villa Rufolo sit among views that inspired Richard Wagner and countless artists. The driver brings you back to your hotel as the afternoon fades.
