The Experience
The day starts with pickup from your Sorrento accommodation in a private air-conditioned car. The driver handles the winding coastal road—the Amalfi Drive itself—while you watch the cliffs and sea pass. Positano comes first: a cliffside village of steep narrow streets, boutique shops and cafes built down to a pebble beach. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta sits at the water's edge with its distinctive majolica-tiled dome; inside is a 13th-century Byzantine icon. You get time to walk the beach at Spiaggia Grande, the main strand where the panorama across the Gulf spreads out.
From Positano the route continues to Amalfi, an ancient Maritime Republic and UNESCO site. The Amalfi Cathedral dominates the main square with its Byzantine-influenced façade and grand flight of steps; the relics of Saint Andrew are kept inside. Nearby stands the Arsenale di Amalfi, a rare medieval shipyard dating to at least 1042, now restored and housing the Museum of the Compass and the Duchy of Amalfi. The town also has a beach and cafes where you can rest or taste a Santa Rosa pastry, a local specialty.
Ravello, perched higher on the coast, is the final stop—a small hilltop town of narrow alleys and a charming central square. The square itself is the draw: sit in one of the cafes, wander the galleries and shops tucked into the maze of streets, or spend time at Villa Rufolo, a 13th-century merchant's villa with Moorish-inspired architecture, hidden courtyards and terraced gardens overlooking the Amalfi Coast. The return drive to Sorrento follows the same scenic coastal road, completing the loop.
