The Experience

You start at Bologna's central station or your hotel, and by mid-morning you're standing in front of the Ferrari Museum in Maranello—300 metres from the actual factory floor. The museum holds about 40 rotating models, but what stays with you are the rooms dedicated to Formula One: World Championship cars from 1999 to 2008, 110 trophies, and the original helmets worn by Villeneuve, Berger, Mansell and Prost. Your English-speaking guide walks you through the history, and if you've arranged it in advance, you can pay extra to sit in the F1 Simulator or drive a Ferrari on the roads near Maranello—they film it and give you the video.

After Maranello, the minivan heads to Sant'Agata Bolognese for the Lamborghini Factory and Museum. This one opened in 2001, and the collection includes the Miura S, the Countach S, the Espada—the cars that made Lamborghini legendary. The factory tour takes you past the production line where they build the Urus SUV, and you see how a supercar actually comes together. Like Ferrari, Lamborghini offers a test drive or simulator session for an extra fee if you've booked it ahead. The whole Motor Valley tour lasts 8 hours, and groups stay under 15 people, so it doesn't feel like a cattle run.

Lunch happens somewhere in between—typical Italian food, nothing fancy, but it breaks up the driving. Then you move to the Ducati Museum and Factory, the last stop. Ducati's museum is arranged around an illuminated racetrack that displays 33 legendary motorcycles, and the nine themed rooms walk you through fifty years of the company's history: from a small electrical business to a racing giant. The factory sits right next to the museum, so you see where the bikes are actually made. Closed shoes are mandatory on the factory floor for safety reasons, so wear something practical.

The whole day runs on a shared schedule, which means you're moving with other enthusiasts—not a private driver waiting around. Pickup is from Bologna Central Railway Station, the airport, or your accommodation, and you return the same way. If you want to drive either supercar or try a simulator, you need to arrange it when you book, not on the day. The factories get crowded, so availability depends on their schedule, not just yours.
