It’s still dark when we pile into the van in Ubud—4:30am, the air cool and a bit damp. Our guide, Pak Wayan, hands out sarongs for the temple later and quietly jokes about needing coffee before sunrise. The drive up to Kintamani is quiet except for the occasional rooster crow drifting through an open window. As we reach Mount Abang’s base, there’s this earthy smell—wet leaves, a hint of wood smoke from a nearby hut.

We start barefoot on the soft path, moving slow and silent. It’s not just walking; you actually notice the crunch of twigs underfoot and the way mist clings to your arms. Pak Wayan points out tiny wild orchids growing between roots—easy to miss if you’re rushing. There’s something grounding about walking like this, especially with everyone so quiet. You can hear birds waking up and even catch a whiff of incense from a distant shrine.

Halfway through, we pause by a small lake where we help release rescued birds and fish back into the water. It feels simple but meaningful—one little act for nature. Later on, we each plant a young tree along the trail edge; I still remember the feel of cool soil on my hands. Breakfast is laid out picnic-style: warm rice cakes, fresh fruit, hot ginger tea that cuts through the mountain chill.
