The experience
If you have a free afternoon in Strasbourg and want to understand what makes Alsace Grand Cru wines distinct, this tour takes you to three working estates where the winemakers themselves explain the terroir. Alsace has 51 Grand Cru designations (all located on hillsides with optimal sun exposure), and only four grape varieties are permitted to carry the name. You'll taste the same variety from different Grand Cru parcels on the same day, so you can taste how soil and slope shape the wine itself.
The Wach family has been making wine since 1648 and now ages each Grand Cru for a minimum of three years in bottle before release, a refinement process they compare to cheese-making. The Hering family, based in Barr since 1858, tends more than 10 hectares in the Vosges foothills and works with the Kirchberg de Barr terroir. Domaine Céline Metz represents the 11th generation on an estate with a family cellar dating to 1728, cultivating 10 hectares including two in the granite-based Winzenberg Grand Cru. Each winemaker introduces you to the wines that define their estate, and you taste about 12 across the day. Lunch happens in Barr itself, in the heart of the wine-growing capital of the Lower Rhine.
Private transportation and a guide in your chosen language are included for the full 8.5 hours. The route follows the Alsace wine route through the region, stopping only at the three estates you've booked.

Is this one for you? This is a private tour, so the pace and stops are yours alone: ideal if you want the winemakers' full attention and time to linger over the wines without a group schedule. The 8.5-hour commitment suits a full day away from the city. If you have only an afternoon, a shorter group tour may fit better.
