The Experience

Hands grip the handlebars. The engine rumbles. Sand sprays behind you as the quad bike lurches forward across flat desert floor, your guide riding close enough to call out if you need help. It's your first time on one of these machines, probably, and the instructor made sure you knew the basics back at the centre—but nothing quite prepares you for the actual feeling of it. An English-speaking astronomer explains what you're looking at—moon craters, Saturn's rings, star constellations, sometimes Mars if the night is clear. You take turns at the scope. The desert is dark enough that the sky feels crowded with light.

The whole thing runs from pickup at your hotel through the return drive back, which takes about 30 minutes each way. You'll be tired by the end, sand in places you didn't expect, but you'll have done five separate things in one evening instead of sitting by the pool.
