Five Hours in the Sinai Desert: Quad Bikes, Camels, and Stars

You get picked up from your hotel, driven 30 minutes into the Sinai Desert, and spend the afternoon quad biking through valleys and dunes with an instructor nearby, then camel riding and relaxing at a Bedouin camp with tea. After sunset, you eat a fire-cooked dinner, watch a traditional show, and use telescopes to see Saturn and constellations with an astronomer's explanation. The Experience

Hands grip the handlebars. The engine rumbles. Sand sprays behind you as the quad bike lurches forward across flat desert floor, your guide riding close enough to call out if you need help. It's your first time on one of these machines, probably, and the instructor made sure you knew the basics back at the centre—but nothing quite prepares you for the actual feeling of it. After ten minutes of getting used to the throttle, the group heads toward a valley between the mountains, where the real riding happens. Dunes roll in front of you. You're not racing; you're moving through the landscape at a pace that lets you feel the shift of sand under the wheels and notice how the light changes as you climb.

The quad biking takes up the first part of the afternoon. After you hand back the helmet and catch your breath, there's a camel waiting. The ride is slower, quieter—a chance to take photos and let your legs stop shaking. Then the group moves to the Bedouin camp, a cluster of low tents set into the desert. You sit on cushions inside one of them, sipping Habbak tea while the light starts to change. Before sunset, everyone walks up a small hill to watch it happen. The mountains turn rose-colored. The valley below goes quiet. It's the kind of moment that feels both staged and genuine at the same time, because it is both.

Dinner comes after dark. The food is cooked over an open fire—fresh produce, mineral water, buffet style—and there's soft drinks included. An hour of entertainment follows: fire eating, folklore dancing, and Tannoura spinning. It's not subtle, but it's not trying to be. After that, the group moves to where the telescopes are set up. An English-speaking astronomer explains what you're looking at—moon craters, Saturn's rings, star constellations, sometimes Mars if the night is clear. You take turns at the scope. The desert is dark enough that the sky feels crowded with light.

The whole thing runs from pickup at your hotel through the return drive back, which takes about 30 minutes each way. You'll be tired by the end, sand in places you didn't expect, but you'll have done five separate things in one evening instead of sitting by the pool.

What’s included

Your day includes hotel pickup and drop-off, a 30-minute transfer to the desert quad bike centre, safety briefing and helmet, quad biking through flat sand and dunes with a guide riding alongside, a camel ride with photo time, tea at a traditional Bedouin camp before sunset, a buffet dinner cooked over an open fire with soft drinks and water, an hour of fire eating, folklore dancing and Tannoura entertainment, and stargazing with telescopes guided by an English-speaking astronomer who explains the constellations, Saturn, moon craters and other visible objects that night.
