The experience

Hands grip the handlebars. The engine rumbles. Sand sprays behind you as the quad bike lurches forward across flat desert floor, your guide riding close enough to call out if you need help. It's your first time on one of these machines, probably, and the instructor made sure you knew the basics back at the centre, but nothing quite prepares you for the actual feeling of it.
