The Experience

I still had dust on my shoes when we rolled up to Country World Adventure Park outside Puerto Plata. The air smelled like wet earth and sugarcane, and I could hear roosters somewhere behind the country house bar. Our guide—Luis, I think?—handed us helmets and grinned at my nervous laugh (I’ve never driven an ATV before). He explained everything in this patient way, even when I fumbled with the starter button. The 300cc engine sounded louder than I expected. We set off in a line, bumping over ruts and splashing through shallow riverbeds.
