The experience

The activity starts 10 to 20 minutes from Amber Cove and Taino Bay in Maimon, a small village where you'll get your helmet, gear and a safety briefing before heading out. You choose between a single ATV (you ride alone) or a double ATV (one driver, one passenger). The minimum age to drive is 16. Passengers can be younger. From there, you ride through the village itself, seeing how locals live and farm, then push into the Dominican countryside on unpaved terrain (river beds, fields, rough tracks), where the landscape changes as you move through it. Wear clothes you don't mind getting dusty. This is not a paved-road experience.

Two stops break up the ride. First is a working cigar-rolling shack where you watch the craft and sample organic hot chocolate and coffee made locally. The second is a beach where you can swim if you want to, then the route finishes at Maimon beach in front of Amber Cove Port. A guide leads the group and speaks English or Spanish. The whole outing runs three hours. Hotel or port pickup and drop-off are included, along with bottled water, helmets, full insurance and an air-conditioned vehicle for transport to and from the base.
