The Experience
Dust kicked up behind us as we rumbled out of the port—nothing quite like that first jolt of the ATV under you. The air was thick with the scent of wet earth after last night’s rain, and our guide, Carlos, grinned as he waved us down a narrow trail lined with sugar cane. We zipped past small houses painted in pastel colors; kids waved from porches, their laughter mixing with the hum of engines. It’s not just about speed here—there’s this feeling you’re getting a peek into real Dominican life.
Bergatin Beach came up outta nowhere—a wide stretch of sand where fishermen were hauling in nets and a couple of stray dogs napped under old boats. We had half an hour to wander or just flop down and let the sea breeze do its thing. I dipped my toes in; water was warm, salty, and clear enough to spot tiny shells swirling around my feet. Back on the ATVs, we followed muddy tracks to River Yasica and then River Camu—both spots where locals sometimes wash clothes or cool off when it gets too hot. The ride itself? Bumpy for sure, but that’s half the fun. You’ll get splashed if it rained recently—my shirt still had mud spots when we finished.
