The Experience

I never thought I’d be rolling through Copenhagen on a Segway, but there we were—helmets on, wobbling a bit at first (I was sure I’d tip over). Our guide, Mads, had this dry sense of humor and made the training feel less embarrassing. The air smelled faintly salty by the waterfront and I could hear gulls somewhere overhead. Once we got moving, it felt weirdly easy—like my feet had learned something new without asking me first.

We zipped off into these wide, car-free paths where you can actually hear yourself think (or laugh when someone nearly steers into a bush—no names). First stop was this lesser-known mermaid statue—Mads called her “the little sister.” Then just a few minutes later, there she was: the famous Little Mermaid herself. Everyone sort of paused for photos and I remember thinking she looked smaller than I expected, but also more patient somehow. There was this soft breeze coming off the water and people speaking Danish nearby—can’t say I understood much but it felt friendly.

The tour kept moving—past Amalienborg Palace where we spotted the Queen’s guards (I tried to wave; they didn’t flinch), then right through Nyhavn with all those wild colors stacked along the canal. Mads shared stories about old sailors and H.C. Andersen living nearby—I probably missed half the details because I was distracted by how smooth the Segway felt gliding over cobblestones. At Ofelia Square we stopped for a breather and snapped photos with the Opera House across the water. There’s something about seeing so many landmarks in just an hour that makes your head spin a bit—in a good way.

Back at base, we handed in our radios and helmets. They gave us this organic juice (tasted like apples and something green) and a tiny Segway souvenir that made me laugh—honestly, it’s still in my backpack. If you’re looking for a day trip in Copenhagen that doesn’t feel rushed but still covers all those must-see spots, this is it. I still think about that feeling of cruising past centuries-old buildings with nothing but fresh air between you and the city.
