The Experience

“You’ll get the hang of it in five minutes,” our guide Mads promised, handing me a helmet with a radio tucked inside. I was skeptical—my balance isn’t exactly world-class—but after wobbling around their indoor track (I might’ve nearly crashed into the wall once), it actually felt kind of natural. The first thing I noticed outside was how quiet the Segway was compared to the city—a gentle whir under me while bikes zipped by and someone somewhere was roasting coffee beans. Copenhagen smells like pastries in the morning, honestly.

Mads kept up this running commentary as we rolled down Strøget and into King’s Square—bits about old theaters and why Danes are obsessed with their art. He waved at a woman selling flowers; she smiled back like they knew each other. At Nyhavn, we stopped for photos (the colors really do look painted on) and he told us how this place used to be wild—sailors, bars, all-night stories. I tried to say “Christiansborg” correctly; Mads grinned but didn’t correct me. The wind off the canal made my eyes water just a bit but maybe that was just me taking it all in.

We zipped by the Old Stock Exchange with its twisted dragon spire—didn’t expect to care about architecture but there’s something about seeing it up close from ground level. Somewhere near a tucked-away garden, Mads pointed out a spot even locals miss (he said he comes here to read sometimes). By the time we reached Christiansborg Palace, he was talking about Danish happiness rankings and welfare—made me wonder if riding Segways through your own city is part of the secret recipe.

The Latin Quarter felt different—quieter streets, people chatting outside little cafes with wool scarves wrapped twice around their necks. After parking our Segways back at base, they handed out hot chocolate (or beer if you wanted) and let us hang out for a bit. I still think about that feeling of gliding through Copenhagen’s mix of old and new—it sticks with you longer than you’d think.
