The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the salt in the air and how the van smelled faintly of neoprene and sunscreen. We piled in just after sunrise—me, two Dutch guys who’d been diving here all week, and our guide Li, who somehow remembered everyone’s names and favorite snacks. The drive to the first site, Tugboat, was only a few minutes but felt longer because I kept craning my neck to see flashes of turquoise through the trees. Li told us stories about the old harbor as we suited up on the pebbly shore. My mask kept fogging up (classic), but when I finally ducked under, everything went quiet except for my own bubbles—there’s something about that first moment underwater that makes you forget how early it is.

I didn’t expect to laugh so much between dives. After Tugboat, we shared bottled water and compared notes—one of the Dutch guys swore he saw a turtle but none of us could back him up. The second tank was at Directors Bay, which looked almost too calm on the surface. Underneath though? Corals everywhere, these weird little shrimp tucked into crevices, plus a school of blue tangs that seemed to follow us for half the dive. Li pointed out a camouflaged lobster with her pointer stick (I still don’t know how she spotted it). There was this moment when sunlight came through at an angle and everything glowed orange for a second—I keep thinking about that light.

We talked about going west next time—apparently Carpile feels like another planet altogether—but honestly I liked sticking close to town and hearing Li chat with locals at the snack stand after we packed up. There’s no rush on these dives; you get time to rinse off, ask questions, joke around about who used up their air fastest (me), and just let it all sink in before heading back. Curacao shore diving isn’t flashy or fancy but it’s real, you know? And somehow that made me want to come back before I’d even left.
