itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Hvar island tour with tastings

  • Start from Hvar town
  • Visit Napoleon fortress viewpoint
  • Drive through villages and lavender fields
  • Stop at St. Roko’s Chapel viewpoint
  • Wine and olive oil tasting at Duboković Winery
  • Return to hotel via new road

I didn’t expect to be out of breath before we’d even tasted any wine — but that first stop at the Napoleon fortress above Hvar town did it. I mean, 250 meters up sounds like nothing until you’re standing there, wind tugging at your shirt, looking down at the tangled streets and the islands scattered like coins. Our guide, Toni, pointed out the Paklinski islands and told us how locals used to signal each other with mirrors from up here. I tried to picture it — sunlight flashing across the water — but mostly I just felt small in a good way.

The drive inland is where Hvar really surprised me. The old road twists through stone walls and sleepy villages. We passed lavender fields that weren’t quite in bloom yet (Toni joked they’re always late when you want to show them off), but you could still catch hints of something herbal on the breeze if you cracked a window. At St. Roko’s Chapel we stopped again — not for long, just enough time to stretch our legs and stare out over Stari Grad Plain. It’s a UNESCO site but honestly it just looked peaceful, all those little plots divided by ancient lines. Someone’s dog barked in the distance; otherwise it was quiet.

Ivo Duboković met us at his winery in Jelsa — he shook my hand with both of his, which made me laugh because I never know what to do with my other hand in those moments. His cellar is more like a cave than anything fancy: cool air, stone walls, bottles stacked every which way. We tried his Medvid red first (I’m not a wine expert but even I could tell it was special) and then he brought out these tiny spoons of olive oil flavored with wild herbs and citrus peel. The rosemary one kind of knocked me sideways — I keep thinking about that taste days later. Ivo told stories about vines up near St. Nicolas peak that are older than most people’s grandparents. He seemed proud but also sort of shy about it.

The ride back was quicker (new road this time), everyone a bit quieter maybe from the wine or maybe just full from all those flavors lingering on our tongues. Pickup and drop-off were easy — no stress there. Anyway, if you want a day trip from Hvar town that feels more like visiting someone’s home than ticking off sights, this is probably it.
