The Experience

"You'll see why people leave Dubrovnik for this," our guide said as we pulled out of the hotel, and he wasn't wrong. The drive into Montenegro takes about an hour, and somewhere between the Adriatic coast and the limestone cliffs, the crowds thin out. We stopped at Verige first — a viewpoint where the bay opens up below you, dramatic and sudden, with the water so clear you can see why people call it the Adriatic's best-kept corner. The Mercedes was comfortable, air-conditioned, and the WiFi actually worked, which mattered because the audio guide on your smartphone walks you through the history as you move through each town.

Perast came next, a small baroque town that feels frozen in the 17th century — old stone palaces, narrow streets, the kind of place where you can sit by the water and actually hear yourself think. This is where the optional boat ride to Our Lady of the Rocks happens. It's a short trip out to a tiny island with a church and museum, and the views back toward the bay are the kind you'll scroll through later and wonder if you edited them. Not everyone takes the boat, and that's fine; the town itself is worth an hour just walking and stopping for coffee.

Then Kotor, the main event. Three hours of free time to move at your own pace through the UNESCO-listed Old Town, which means you can climb the medieval city walls if you want that panoramic view, or wander the narrow streets around St. Tryphon Cathedral, or sit in a café and let the day settle. The walls are steep and take time, so if that's your plan, wear the comfortable shoes they mention. The town is compact enough that you won't feel rushed, and the guide is there if you have questions, but mostly you're on your own to find what interests you.

The whole day runs about nine to ten hours depending on traffic and how long you linger in Kotor. You need a valid passport or EU ID for the border, and that's handled smoothly with small-group crossings.
