The Experience

You're picked up from your Dubrovnik hotel and driven south along the Adriatic coast, passing Cavtat and the Konavle region before crossing into Montenegro. The road hugs the water; mountains rise behind. After the border, the coast opens into bays—Herceg Novi, Bijela, Kamenari—each one framed by old Venetian and Turkish fortresses. At the Verige isthmus, you stop at a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the Bay of Kotor itself, with the two small islands of St George and Our Lady of the Rocks visible across the water. There's time for coffee and to stretch.

Perast comes next, a village of baroque buildings tucked beneath St. Elijah hill. Your driver points out the parish church of St Nicolas and explains the town's maritime history. If you want, you can take a boat out to the artificial island and the 16th-century Church of Our Lady of the Rocks—that's a separate fee and your choice. Then you drive to Kotor, the UNESCO city at the very bottom of the bay, surrounded by near-vertical mountains. A licensed local guide meets you for a walking tour of the medieval walled city, its narrow streets and trade-era architecture. After that, the day is yours: lunch in the old town, or the driver can take you to a 250-year-old family tavern in Morinj Bay on the way back, with cold springs and a vertical cliff face behind it.

On the return, you pass Trojica Mountain, the highest viewpoint in the region, looking down at Kotor and the inner bay from above. Then it's the scenic coastal drive back to the Croatian border—the driver chooses the crossing with the least traffic—and a ferry ride across the bay. From there, about 55 minutes back to your hotel in Dubrovnik.
