The Experience

Ever wondered what it’s like to cross into Bosnia & Herzegovina from Dubrovnik just for a day? I didn’t really know what to expect—maybe a few churches, some old stones. But the drive itself surprised me first: we left Dubrovnik early, the air still salty from the sea, and our driver (Ivan) pointed out the Neretva delta as we passed. He told us about watermelons grown there—“best in summer,” he said, and grinned like he knew something I didn’t. The road felt quieter after the border, almost softer somehow. It made me want to roll down the window just to hear how different the world sounded on this side.

Medjugorje was next. I’m not Catholic, but you could feel something different in the air—maybe it was all those people moving quietly toward St. James Church or maybe just the way incense mixes with dust in the sunlight. We watched a small group praying near the statue of Our Lady of Peace; honestly, I felt like an outsider but in a good way—like being let in on someone else’s secret for an hour or two. Ivan explained how people come here from everywhere since 1981, hoping for miracles or maybe just some peace. He laughed when I tried to say “Medjugorje” properly (I definitely butchered it).

Mostar hit me differently. The Old Bridge is famous—I’d seen photos—but standing on it felt weirdly personal, like you’re part of every story that’s crossed it before. There were kids jumping off into the river below (I held my breath), and someone selling figs nearby that tasted like summer if that makes sense. We wandered narrow streets where mosques and churches stand almost side by side; Ivan pointed out bullet marks on walls without making a big deal out of it, which somehow made it more real. We stopped for coffee at a place he liked—thick and strong enough to wake up your bones.

Pocitelj was our last stop before heading back to Dubrovnik—a hillside village with stone houses stacked like they might tumble down if you breathed too hard. It was quiet except for birds and one old man sweeping his doorway who nodded at us without stopping his work. The sun started dipping as we drove home; I kept thinking about how many borders we’d crossed in just one day—literal ones and maybe some inside myself too.
