The Experience

Ever wondered what it’s like to cross into Bosnia & Herzegovina from Dubrovnik just for a day? I didn’t really know what to expect—maybe a few churches, some old stones. But the drive itself surprised me first: we left Dubrovnik early, the air still salty from the sea, and our driver (Ivan) pointed out the Neretva delta as we passed. He told us about watermelons grown there—“best in summer,” he said, and grinned like he knew something I didn’t. The road felt quieter after the border, almost softer somehow. It made me want to roll down the window just to hear how different the world sounded on this side.

Medjugorje was next. I’m not Catholic, but you could feel something different in the air—maybe it was all those people moving quietly toward St. James Church or maybe just the way incense mixes with dust in the sunlight. We watched a small group praying near the statue of Our Lady of Peace; honestly, I felt like an outsider but in a good way—like being let in on someone else’s secret for an hour or two.
