The Experience

The drive out of Dubrovnik crosses the Dr. Franjo Tuđman Bridge, where the view opens onto the Rijeka Dubrovačka bay, steep cliffs and the Dubrovnik countryside rolling toward Mount Srđ. From there, the route heads inland to Medugorje, a town that became a pilgrimage destination in 1981 when six young people reported apparitions of the Virgin Mary. The site draws millions of visitors seeking spiritual renewal; many climb Apparition Hill on their knees as an act of devotion. The Church of St. James stands at the center of the town's spiritual life, and your guide will walk you through the peaceful, rolling hills that frame the experience.

The next stop is Kravice Waterfall, a natural amphitheater of cascading pools set into limestone cliffs and surrounded by lush forest. The water is clear and cool enough to swim in, and the area has walking trails and viewpoints scattered through the trees. The ruins of old mill buildings and watermills still stand nearby—remnants of when the site was used to grind grain. Depending on the season and your group's pace, you can spend time in the water, explore the forest, or simply stand in front of the falls.

Mostar closes the day. The city's defining landmark is the Stari Most, the "Old Bridge" built in the 16th century during the Ottoman Empire and designed by the architect Mimar Hayruddin. The bridge was destroyed during the Bosnian War in the 1990s but was rebuilt in 2004 using traditional techniques and materials. In the Old Town, you can try Bosnian food and traditional Bosnian coffee while your guide explains the city's layered history—its mix of cultures, religions and architectural styles that made it one of the world's twenty most visited cities.
