Day 1 — Visit Mostar and Kravice Waterfalls

  • Travel from Dubrovnik to Mostar
  • Explore Mostar and Old Bridge
  • Visit Kravice Waterfalls
  • Return to Dubrovnik

The first thing I noticed was the way the light hit the Old Bridge in Mostar—sort of glinting off the stone, but not in that postcard-perfect way. There were kids leaning over the edge, daring each other to jump (our guide, Marko, said it’s a whole tradition here). We wandered through narrow alleys where the air smelled like strong coffee and grilled meat, and honestly, I lost track of time just watching people chat in a mix of Bosnian and Croatian. Marko pointed out bullet marks on some walls—he didn’t dwell on it, but you could feel the weight of history in this place.

It took about two hours from Dubrovnik to reach Mostar, but the drive felt shorter than I expected. Maybe it was all the stories Marko told along the way—about river crossings and how everyone here seems to have a cousin in every village. At one point we stopped for burek at a tiny bakery (I still think about that flaky pastry), then kept going until we reached Kravice Waterfalls. The sound there is something else—just this constant rush that drowns out your thoughts for a second. The spray felt cool on my face; I didn’t bring a swimsuit but some folks did and just waded right in.

I tried saying “Kravica” properly—Li laughed when I butchered it—and then we just sat for a while listening to birds and water, not really talking. On the way back to Dubrovnik I watched the hills roll by through the window, feeling kind of tired but also weirdly peaceful. If you’re after something loud or flashy this probably isn’t your tour. But if you want to see Mostar up close (not just snap a photo), or hear what waterfalls actually sound like when nobody’s around…well, yeah.
