Step-by-step itinerary
Cave tubing adventure in Mayan underworld
- Hike through humid green forest
- Gear up and get in tube
- Tube down river for 1 hour 45 minutes
- Turn on headlights inside cave
- Relax and enjoy glittery cave walls
The experience
The day starts with a 45-minute walk through humid forest to reach the cave entrance. Once there, you gear up, settle into your tube and float downstream for approximately an hour and forty-five minutes while the guide leads the way with a headlight. The water is cold and the cave stays dark. You'll use your own headlight to see the glittery walls as you drift. The current does the work. You rest in the tube and let the river carry you through the Mayan underworld.
Your guide navigates the route and points out the cave formations as you float. Bottled water and snacks come along, and towels are provided so you can dry off afterward. The whole experience, from pickup at your hotel to return, takes about eight hours. An air-conditioned vehicle handles the transport both ways, so you don't need to arrange your own.
This is a private tour, so it's just your group moving through the cave system. The minimum booking is two people. Children from age one are welcome, and the float itself suits all fitness levels. The hike beforehand is the main physical demand, and the guide will pace it to your group.

Top questions

Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (11 to 18 years); Child (6 to 10 years); Infant (1 to 5 years): free.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
How long do I actually spend floating in the cave?
The float lasts approximately one hour and forty-five minutes. The 45-minute forest hike comes before you reach the cave entrance, so plan for the full eight-hour experience from hotel pickup to return.
What do I need to bring or wear for cave tubing?
Wear clothes and shoes you don't mind getting wet, and bring a change of clothes for after. The tour provides the tube, headlight, and all safety equipment. Towels are included so you can dry off. Bottled water and snacks are part of the package.
Is the cave cold the whole time?
Yes, the water stays cold throughout the float. The cave itself is dark and cool, which is why the guide uses headlights and you'll use yours to see the cave walls. Bring a light layer if you're sensitive to cold, though most people find the temperature refreshing after the forest hike.
Does the tour include lunch?
Lunch is not included, but your guide will make a stop at a local restaurant if you'd like to eat during the day. Snacks and bottled water are provided as part of the tour.
