Float through Maya caves, explore rock formations and rivers, then enjoy a local lunch.

Cave tubing in San Ignacio combines hiking, water travel and cultural learning in a single day. After a drive and forest walk, you tube through several caves and an open river for about two and a half hours, passing Maya artifacts and geological formations, including a swim to a secret chamber behind a small waterfall. A local guide explains the cave's significance to the Maya and the landscape itself, and the day ends with a traditional Belizean lunch.

The experience

The day starts with a one-hour drive to the parking lot, where you change into water clothes and hike 45 minutes through the forest. Your guide talks about the plants along the way (which ones the local community uses and how), so by the time you reach the water, you already know the landscape as something lived in, not just passed through. At the starting point you can jump straight into your tube or sit on the platform and ease in. Either way, you're floating within minutes.

The tubing itself takes about two and a half hours. You float down through several caves and sections of open river, and the guide points out the geological formations as you go: the shapes the water carved over centuries. You'll walk across the top of a small waterfall and swim to a secret chamber where Maya artifacts sit in the rock. The helmet and headlamp let you see into the darker passages. The life vest keeps you stable in the current. This is not a passive float: you're moving through the water actively, and the guide is there explaining what you're seeing and why the cave mattered to the people who used it.

After you climb out and change back into dry clothes, lunch is waiting: a meal cooked the local Belizean way, not a standard tourist plate. Snacks and water are included throughout the day, and the air-conditioned vehicle gets you back at the end. Bring a reusable water bottle to refill along the way.

What’s included

  • Helmet, inner tube, headlamp and life vest.
  • snacks and a local Belizean lunch.
  • all fees and taxes.
  • air-conditioned vehicle pickup and return.

Is this one for you?The guide speaks English or Spanish, so choose the language that lets you follow the commentary on the plants, the Maya history and the cave formations without strain. Children from age 4 can tube, though the full day (the drive, the hike and the two and a half hours in the water) works best for kids who are comfortable with a longer outing.

Live guide in English and Spanish.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (11 to 17 years); Child (4 to 10 years). Children under 4 can't be included in the booking.

What's the hike like before the tubing starts?

The hike to the starting point takes 45 minutes through forest where your guide points out plants used by the local community. It's not steep or technical. The pace is steady and the guide stops to explain what you're walking past, so the learning is built into the walk itself.

How deep is the water and what if I'm not a strong swimmer?

You float in an inner tube the whole time, and a life vest keeps you buoyant. The guide controls the pace and stays with the group, and you can sit on the platform at the starting point to get comfortable before pushing off. The tubing is about two and a half hours total, moving through caves and open river sections.

What are the Maya artifacts I'll see in the secret chamber?

The secret chamber holds artifacts left behind by the Maya who used the caves. The guide will explain what they are and why the cave was important to them. The formations around the artifacts are part of what makes the chamber worth swimming to. The guide talks about both as you're there.
