The experience

The sampan is the thing that makes Tam Coc different from every other limestone-and-water landscape you might see in Southeast Asia. You sit in a wooden boat (low, narrow, steered by a boatman using his feet), and drift through three cave passages carved into the rock. The water is still enough to reflect the cliffs. Before the boat, you climb Hang Mua. It's 500 steps up a steep path, and the temple sits at the top. On the way down or up, depending on the day's order, you stop at Hoa Lu, the 10th-century capital.
