The Experience

I’ll be honest — I booked this Ninh Binh day trip mostly because I needed a break from Hanoi’s noise. The bus ride out felt like a slow exhale, watching the city blur into rice paddies. Our guide, Minh, had this gentle way of pointing out things you’d miss — water buffalo in the fields, kids waving as we passed. It was still early when we reached Hoa Lu, but the air already smelled like wet stone and grass. I didn’t expect to feel much walking around old temples, but something about the mossy walls and the quiet really got to me.

We hopped on bikes after that (I was nervous — haven’t cycled in years), pedaling past tiny houses and women selling fruit by the roadside. Minh told us stories about dynasties I’d never heard of; he made it sound like he actually cared. Lunch was at this family-run spot near Tam Coc — simple food, but the tofu with lemongrass is still stuck in my memory. The boat ride at Trang An was quieter than I expected — just the sound of oars and sometimes a bird calling from somewhere deep in the reeds.
