The Experience

The first thing I remember is the way the rice paddies flashed by outside the bus window—somehow greener than I’d pictured. Our guide, Minh, met us right at our Hanoi hotel (which was a relief because I’m hopeless with directions). He had this easy laugh that made everyone relax, even before we’d left the Old Quarter behind. The ride out took maybe two hours but felt shorter; I kept catching glimpses of water buffalo and kids waving at us from muddy paths. It was one of those mornings where you can’t quite believe you’re really here.

We hopped on bikes in Hoa Lu. Minh explained it used to be Vietnam’s capital centuries ago—I’ll admit, I only half caught the dynasties’ names (Dinh? Le? Still can’t pronounce them right). The air smelled faintly sweet, like wet grass after rain. There were old stone gates and shrines tucked under banyan trees. At one point an old woman selling lychees grinned at me and handed me one for free—sticky fingers all afternoon after that. Lunch came next: goat meat (which was better than it sounds), fried rice, and some kind of tangy dipping sauce. We ate outside with dragonflies buzzing around.

After lunch we climbed into these little bamboo boats for Tam Coc—the “three caves.” The rower used her feet to paddle, which looked impossible until she did it for an hour straight. Inside the caves it went quiet except for water dripping off the limestone overhead. Cool air on my face, sunlight flickering in through cracks—it felt almost like being inside a secret. I tried taking photos but none of them did it justice.

The last part was Mua Cave: 500 steps up (I counted…sort of). My legs burned but reaching the top was worth it just for that view over Ninh Binh—patchwork fields, winding river, tiny boats below. A couple next to me just sat down and didn’t say anything for a while; I get why. On the way back to Hanoi I watched dusk settle over the fields and thought about how different everything felt compared to city life. Still thinking about that boat ride sometimes when things get noisy at home.
