You arrive at Hoa Lu, the ancient capital, where two temples dedicated to 10th-century Vietnamese kings sit among rice paddies and limestone peaks. A casual bike ride loops through the surrounding village — it's included and optional, so you can cycle with locals going about their day, walk around for photos, or rest at the restaurant while others ride. The bikes suit adults and older children; younger kids can skip it without affecting the rest of the tour.

At 11:45 a.m., a buffet lunch arrives with goat meat, fried rice, and vegetarian options. After eating, you head to either Trang An or Tam Coc — you choose one before booking. Both involve sitting in a sampan (a flat-bottomed wooden boat) while a local rower poles you through caves carved into the karst landscape. Trang An is a newer UNESCO site with six caves and takes two hours fifteen minutes; Tam Coc is the older, more famous route with three caves and takes one hour forty-five minutes. The landscape is similar in both — limestone walls rising from the water, cave passages you duck through, and villages visible on the banks.

In the late afternoon, you drive to Mua Cave at the edge of the Tam Coc area. The hike up 500 steps is optional and carries a separate entry fee (around 100,000 Vietnamese dong); if you skip it, you return to Hanoi. Those who climb reach a panoramic viewpoint over the entire karst valley. The drive back to your hotel takes about two hours, with drop-off around 7 p.m. in the Old Quarter or wherever you prefer nearby.
