The day starts with pickup from your Hanoi hotel or the Opera House in the morning, then a drive south to Ninh Binh. You'll arrive at Hoa Lu around 10:30, where your guide walks you through the temples and explains the feudal dynasties that ruled from this ancient capital between 968 and 1010. By noon you're sitting down to a buffet lunch with local specialties—goat meat, fish, chicken, fried rice—and vegetarian options are always on the table.

The afternoon splits into two possible routes. Most travelers choose Tam Coc: you board a bamboo boat for 1.5 hours, poling through a cave system carved into limestone mountains, past rice paddies and water so still it mirrors the sky. After the boat, you spend 45 minutes cycling around the village on a small loop to see how locals live. If you prefer a different experience, Trang An offers boating through caves with stalactites instead. (Tam Coc is at its most striking from April through May.)

The final stop is Mua Cave, also called Dancing Cave. The climb is steep—nearly 500 steps up the mountainside—but the view from the top spreads across the entire Tam Coc valley. You descend, board the bus around 5:30, and arrive back at your Hanoi hotel between 7 and 7:30 in the evening.
