The Experience
The day starts with pickup from your Hanoi Old Quarter hotel between 7:10 and 7:30 a.m., then a two-hour drive south to Ninh Binh. Once there, you walk to the King Dinh Temple at Hoa Lu, the political center of Vietnam during the 10th and 11th centuries under the Dinh, Early Le, and Ly dynasties. The temple sits among dramatic limestone mountains and lush valleys that made this location strategically defensible and culturally significant for over 40 years before the capital moved to Thang Long (modern-day Hanoi) in 1010.
After lunch at a local restaurant serving Vietnamese cuisine, you board a traditional hand-rowed bamboo boat. If you choose the Tam Coc option, the ride lasts 1.5 hours and takes you through three natural water tunnels (Hang Ca, Hang Hai, and Hang Ba) carved through the mountains along the Ngo Dong River. If you select Trang An instead, the boat ride extends to 2 hours through the UNESCO World Heritage landscape often called "Ha Long Bay on land," with limestone karsts rising from peaceful rivers and green valleys. Either way, local boatwomen paddle while you sit in the sampan, weaving between towering peaks and rice paddies.
The final stop is Mua Cave, where you climb almost 500 stone steps up Lying Dragon Mountain to reach the summit. The ascent is moderately challenging, but the reward is a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape—the winding Ngo Dong River, limestone peaks, and rice fields spread across the valley. This is one of Ninh Binh's best photo spots. You leave Mua around 4:30 p.m. and arrive back at your Hanoi hotel between 6:30 and 6:45 p.m.
