Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Ninh Binh's highlights

  • Arrive at Hoa Lu and visit King temples
  • Optional short bike ride or village walk
  • Enjoy buffet lunch with local specialties
  • Boat ride through Trang An caves and temples
  • Climb Mua Cave for panoramic views

The Experience

The day starts with a drive from Hanoi to Hoa Lu, where you'll walk through the King temples and hear your guide explain Vietnam's early dynasties. The site sits in a valley ringed by limestone peaks, and the setting itself tells the story of why this was chosen as the ancient capital. Before lunch, you have the option to cycle a short route through the countryside with your guide—a gentle ride past rice paddies and local villages—or walk the area and rest at a restaurant instead. The bike is free and optional; the choice is yours depending on how you want to spend the morning.

Lunch is a buffet of local dishes at a restaurant in the area, with goat meat as the regional specialty and vegetarian options available. Afterward, you head to Trang An, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where you board a sampan—a traditional wooden boat that seats four people—rowed by a local boatman. The boat winds through a tunnel system carved into limestone, passing caves and small temples linked to local legends. The ride lasts roughly two hours and moves at the pace of the oars, so there's time to take in the landscape without rushing.

The final stop is Mua Cave, where nearly 500 steps climb the side of Lying Dragon Mountain. The ascent is steep but steady, and the reward is a panoramic view from the top: Tam Coc Valley spreads below, rice fields stretch to the horizon, and karst peaks rise in every direction. The drive back to Hanoi follows, with drop-off at or near your hotel in the Old Quarter (Friday to Sunday drop-offs may be close by due to the Night Market pedestrian area). Mineral water is provided on the bus for the return journey.
