The experience

Pickup starts at 7:15 am from your Hanoi Old Quarter hotel (or 7:40 am from Hanoi Opera House if you're staying elsewhere). The drive to Ninh Binh takes roughly three hours, arriving at Hoa Lu Ancient Capital by 10:30 am. Two temples stand on the grounds of the old royal palace (one dedicated to Dinh King, the other to Le King), and the visit traces feudal dynasties and historical periods across Vietnamese culture. Afterward, there's a chance to ride a bicycle around the local village and see how people live there, or simply walk and photograph. It's optional and free, so if cycling isn't your thing, you can rest at the restaurant instead.

At noon you'll have buffet lunch with Vietnamese specialties, and vegetarian options are available. By 1:30 pm you arrive at either Trang An or Tam Coc. Whichever you chose at booking. A local boatman rows a traditional sampan through limestone water caves and karst scenery. Trang An takes 2.5 hours and covers more ground. Tam Coc runs 1.5 hours and is more compact. Both are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and the boat moves slowly enough to take in the landscape and the cave passages as they open up around you.

At 4 pm the group heads to Mua Cave. The climb is 500 stone steps to the summit, where the view opens across the countryside, the Ngo Dong River, and all the way to Tam Coc. The return journey to Hanoi begins at 5 pm, with drop-off at your hotel between 7 and 7:30 pm. The whole day runs 12 hours door to door.
