The experience
The day starts at 8 a.m. with pickup from your Da Nang or Hoi An hotel. My Son Holyland, the former capital of the Champa Kingdom, spreads across a valley ringed by jungle: over 70 interconnected temples built from the 4th to 13th century using only brick and no mortar. Your English-speaking guide walks you through the tower-temples decorated in bas-relief, explaining how the Cham people engineered the structures and what the kingdom's relationship to these sites means. The scale and the detail of the construction become clear only when you stand among them.
After lunch of local noodle, you head to Marble Mountain, a cluster of five small peaks each named for one of the universe's elements: water, metal, fire, wood and earth. Caves and pagodas dot the mountainside, and two viewing points at the summit open onto the surrounding landscape. The caves themselves have a history. They served as a hospital and hiding place for Vietnamese soldiers and Viet Cong during the war. You also visit a family marble carving workshop in the village to see how local artisans work the stone by hand.
The final stop is Am Phu Cave, known as Hell Cave, where the guide explains Buddhist philosophy and the concept of karma. The tour wraps by late afternoon, with return to your hotel included.
