The experience
You're picked up from your hotel in Hoi An or Da Nang and driven to Marble Mountain, where a local guide walks you through the Âm Phủ cave system. These limestone caverns sheltered Vietnamese soldiers during the war and served as a hidden hospital for the wounded. The guide shows you the layout and explains how the caves functioned, then you climb 150 steps or take an elevator to the peak, where pagodas and centuries-old Buddhist statues sit among the stone. The views open onto the river and ocean from different angles across the mountain.
From there you visit the Heaven Cave with its natural limestone formations, then head down to the 500-year-old marble carving village at the foot of the mountain, where local artisans still shape sculptures by hand. The drive then follows the Da Nang coast to Monkey Mountain (Son Tra peninsula), climbing to viewpoints that look out over the city, the Pacific, the Cham islands, and hundreds of fishing boats. Macaque monkeys are common. If luck holds, you'll spot the rare red-shanked douc langur monkeys. Halfway up, you stop at the Lady Buddha statue (68 meters tall, standing over the fishing village), and walk through gardens of flowers and bonsai trees.
The tour ends with either a Vietnamese lunch or dinner at a local restaurant (depending on which option you chose at booking), then a return to your hotel or drop-off at Da Nang Airport.
