The experience
Your guide picks you up from your hotel in Da Nang or Hoi An and drives you to Marble Mountains, a cluster of five limestone and marble hills named after the five elements of the universe. You'll walk through natural caves (some of which sheltered Vietnamese soldiers and civilians during the war), and visit the holy pagodas perched on the summits. The views from the top look out over the city and ocean. At the marble village, you can watch local artisans carving traditional handicrafts and see how the stone is worked by hand.
Next is the Lady Buddha Statue, a 67-meter-high figure standing on Son Tra Peninsula and facing the sea. It's the tallest Buddha statue in Vietnam, built with 17 floors inside. Each floor holds an altar with 21 Buddha statues in different poses and expressions. From there, the tour shifts to a jeep ride up Monkey Mountain, where you'll travel off-the-beaten-track roads through pristine jungle toward the peak. The destination is a former US heliport and radar station built during the Vietnam War, now offering panoramic views of local fishing villages and the Pacific. If conditions are right, you may spot the endangered colorful monkeys that live on the peninsula. The jeep ride itself is the highlight for many: winding through jungle on paved roads with views opening up as you climb.
The full tour takes about five hours from pickup to return. You'll need a moderate level of fitness for the walking and climbing involved, especially at Marble Mountains. Bottled water is provided throughout, and the guide speaks English. Children from age five can join. Specialized infant seats are available if you're traveling with younger children.
