The experience
The tour starts with hotel pickup in Da Nang, then transfers to the base of Son Tra Mountain where you board an Army Jeep for the drive to the peak. From the top you see the whole city laid out below, the bay, and the East Sea. The mountain is also a nature reserve where endangered red-shanked douc langurs live. After the panorama, you visit the Linh Ung Pagoda and the 67-metre Lady Buddha statue on the peninsula, with views back across the water to Da Nang and the fishing boats along the shore.
The second stop is the Marble Mountains, five limestone and marble hills named after the five elements. You take an elevator partway up, then explore the natural caves and visit a Buddhist temple inside the mountain, with your guide explaining the history and culture of Central Vietnam. The marble sculpture village at the base shows local artisans carving statues by hand. The whole route covers rugged jungle roads and takes about four hours from start to finish.
