The Experience

I didn’t expect the air to feel so cool when we stepped out at Marble Mountains—almost sharp, with a faint scent of incense drifting from somewhere I couldn’t see. Our driver, Minh, grinned as he handed us cold water and pointed up toward the steps. The climb wasn’t easy (my legs still remember it), but inside those caves, light filtered through cracks and everything felt hushed—just echoes of distant bells and our own breath. I touched the damp stone wall without thinking. It was colder than I thought it’d be.

Later at the Lady Buddha statue, a woman in a conical hat showed me how to bow properly at the pagoda. I tried to copy her hands—she smiled and fixed my elbows anyway. From there we could see all of Da Nang Bay stretched out under low clouds. The drive up Ba Na Hills was longer than I thought (Minh told stories about his childhood in Da Nang most of the way), but that cable car ride—wow. There’s something weirdly funny about standing on the Golden Bridge with dozens of people taking selfies while you’re just trying to take in those giant stone hands clutching mist. I laughed at myself for feeling shy about it.

My Son Sanctuary was quieter than anywhere else we went—a kind of silence that settles in your chest. The red-brick towers are half-swallowed by green now, but you can still see carvings if you look close enough. Our guide explained some Champa history; honestly, I forgot most dates but not how it felt to stand there with sweat trickling down my back and cicadas buzzing like static in the trees. We ended up in Hoi An Ancient Town as lanterns flickered on—yellow light everywhere, soft voices along the riverbank. I bought a tiny silk lantern for my niece because it seemed right at the time.
