The experience
The tour starts with pickup from your Da Nang or Hoi An hotel and heads first to Marble Mountain, a cluster of five limestone peaks rising from a 2-kilometer square of land about 8 kilometers southeast of Da Nang's city center. From there, the drive takes you to Hoi An Ancient Town, a UNESCO-listed site on the Thu Bon River that has preserved its fusion of Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese and French influences from its centuries as a major Southeast Asian trading port.
Once in the Old Town, you walk the lantern-lit streets and cross the Japanese Covered Bridge, a 60-foot structure painted red-pink with a wooden pagoda roof that dates back to the 15th century and stands as an iconic symbol of Hoi An. The sampan boat ride follows, a candle-lit journey on the Thu Bon River where you watch local activity along the water and catch the sunset over Vietnam's largest river in the central region. The night market comes last, a lively scene of food stalls, lights, and vendors where the sensory experience (the smells, the crowds, the unidentifiable dishes on rice cakes) is part of the draw.
Your guide speaks English throughout and travels with you in a private air-conditioned vehicle, so the pace and stops are yours alone. All entrance fees for Marble Mountain and Hoi An are covered, as is bottled water. The tour runs six hours total, ending at the night market.
