The city thins out into farmland, and you start to feel the weight of what you're about to see.

The Cu Chi Tunnels aren't a museum exhibit you walk through—they're a network of underground passages that honeycomb the earth, built by hand over decades during the war. You watch a short film first, then you're actually crawling through sections of the tunnels themselves, ducking under wooden beams, feeling the dampness and the closeness of the earth above you. There are living quarters carved into the walls, a kitchen, a hospital, a weapons workshop. Your guide explains how people lived down here for months at a time, and the scale of it—the sheer human effort—hits different when you're inside it rather than reading about it. Some tours include a shooting range where you can fire vintage weapons; this one doesn't push that, but it's there if you want it. The landscape shifts again: water appears, trees get denser, the air feels heavier. By early afternoon you're on the water. The boat cruise starts on the main Mekong River, then moves into narrower canals where the trees hang so low you have to duck, and the world gets very quiet. You stop at fruit orchards where you taste whatever's in season—mango, papaya, coconut—and at a honey house where they make tea from local honey. There's a coconut candy workshop where you watch people pull and fold the candy by hand, and you get to taste that too. A sampan—a small wooden boat—takes you through the tightest canals, and if the tour includes traditional music, it happens here, someone playing a guitar or singing while the boat drifts. The whole thing lasts about two and a half hours, and it's the kind of slow that actually feels restful after the intensity of the tunnels.

By 5pm you're heading back to Ho Chi Minh City, and the drive takes another hour and a half.
