The experience

The first thing I noticed stepping out of the van was the sound: metal striking metal, a kind of rhythm you feel in your chest more than hear. We’d just arrived at this knife-making village outside Hanoi, and honestly, I had no idea what to expect. Our guide, Minh, waved us over with a grin and handed me a chunk of iron. “Design your blade,” he said, and I tried not to look clueless as I sketched something that vaguely resembled a kitchen knife. The air smelled like charcoal and something sharper, maybe oil or tar? Hard to say.

I didn’t think I’d actually be allowed near the fire, but there I was, hammering away beside one of the local smiths. His hands moved so fast it looked easy (it’s not). The anvil vibrated under each blow, and at one point Minh laughed because my grip was all wrong. He showed me how to hold it properly, and suddenly it made sense. There’s this part where they dunk the blade into a tar-black chemical bath. Apparently it’s a family secret recipe. The smell is weirdly sweet and smoky at the same time. We took turns shaping and sharpening on this grindstone that looked older than my dad. The smiths barely spoke English but somehow we understood each other through gestures and nods. There was a lot of smiling when I finally got an edge on my blade that could actually cut something. When we finished, Minh wrapped up our knives in old newspaper for the ride back to Hanoi.
