The experience
You start with a 7 am pickup from your Hanoi hotel and drive to Pu Luong Nature Reserve, arriving by mid-morning. After lunch and a rest, you trek 6 km through rice terraces and jungle to Kho Muong, the largest natural cave in the reserve, following trails that pass through Black Thai minority villages. The trek takes three hours and is graded for all fitness levels. You stay overnight in a private room at a local homestay.
Day two begins with breakfast at the lodge, then you trek to Hieu Village and follow forest trails to Hieu Waterfall, where lunch is served by the water. You can swim or climb if you choose. In the afternoon you walk through Don village, the first tourism settlement in Pu Luong, surrounded by rice fields. On day three you trek again to a bamboo raft launch point, then float downstream past the giant waterwheel systems that irrigate the terraces: a moment to sit still and watch the landscape move past. After lunch you check out and drive back toward Hanoi, but if you booked the 4-day option you continue to Ninh Binh instead.
Day four (4-day option only) takes you by boat through Trang An, a karst landscape of limestone peaks rising from water, then to Hoa Lu, the ancient capital of Vietnam during three dynasties. Two temples there are part of a UNESCO World Heritage complex. You cycle to Mua Cave and climb to its summit for a panoramic view of the Tam Coc landscape, then drive back to Hanoi, arriving around 6:30 pm. The tour ends at your hotel.

Is this one for you?Book the 4-day option if you want to see both Pu Luong's mountain landscape and Ninh Binh's karst peaks in one trip. The 3-day Pu Luong tour ends in Hanoi and skips the boat and cycling days. Choose the 3-day Ninh Binh option if you prefer limestone scenery and water-based sightseeing over trekking and villages.

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What is Kho Muong Cave like when you get there?
Kho Muong is the largest natural unspoiled cave in Pu Luong, reached by a 6 km trek through rice terraces and villages on day one. The cave is known for its size and pristine condition, and the trek to reach it passes through Black Thai minority settlements so you see how people live in the reserve.
Can you swim at Hieu Waterfall?

What happens on the bamboo raft part?
On day three you trek to a launch point, then sit on a bamboo raft and float downstream surrounded by nature, passing the giant traditional waterwheel systems that irrigate the rice fields. The raft ride is a moment to relax and take in the landscape.
Is the 4-day option the only way to see Ninh Binh?
No. You can book a 3-day Pu Luong tour that ends in Hanoi, or a separate 3-day Ninh Binh tour, or the 4-day combination that includes both reserves. The 4-day option adds Trang An boat trip, Hoa Lu ancient capital temples, and Mua Cave cycling on the final day.

What kind of accommodation do you stay in?
