The Experience

We left Hanoi before sunrise—still half asleep—and by the time we reached Tam Coc, the air felt different. Softer somehow. Our guide, Minh, handed us bikes and led us along these winding paths past rice paddies so green it almost hurt my eyes. We stopped at a farmer’s house for tea (the kind that tastes faintly grassy) and sticky candy I still can’t pronounce. Minh explained their “VAC” system—garden, pond, cage—while the farmer’s wife smiled at my attempts to say thank you in Vietnamese. She laughed, which made me relax a bit.

After lunch (rice noodles with something tangy I liked but couldn’t identify), we cycled again—this time to Bich Dong pagoda. The stone steps were cool under my hands as I climbed, incense curling up from somewhere inside. Then we headed to Thung Nham bird sanctuary just as the light started to shift gold. The next morning started early with breakfast by the pool (omelet and sweet coffee). We biked to a market where people bargained over vegetables and live chickens—not for show, just real life happening around us. Climbing Mua Cave’s steps was harder than I thought—my legs burned—but that view from Lying Dragon Mountain? Worth every step. You see all of Ninh Binh laid out: rivers curling through fields, limestone cliffs rising up like old bones.

By the time we floated through Tam Coc’s caves in those low wooden boats, everything felt slower—the only sounds were water against rock and someone humming quietly behind me. Hoa Lu was our last stop: ancient walls and stories about emperors I’d never heard of before. The ride back to Hanoi was quiet; everyone half asleep again but this time in that good way you get after a long day outside. Sometimes I still think about that farmer’s smile or the way the birds looked at sunset.
